Greatest Miracle March In 27 Years for Lake Tahoe – Saves Our Snowmobile Season

Apr 12, 2018

With virtually no precipitation in January and February, the Lake Tahoe snowpack was looking dismal. Then March 1 and the snow came and came in with force. The Lake Tahoe basin when from 33% to 77% and we are looking good for the upcoming summer.

After little precipitation though the winter Lake Tahoe was at only 25% of snowpack on March 1st

South Lake Tahoe, CA: During a snow survey on Monday at Slide Mountain, the report noted that Lake Tahoe is within about a foot of its legal storage limit with more rain and snow on the way. The snowpack in the Lake Tahoe and Truckee River basins increased by 43 percentage points during the month of March.

“Now we are in a situation where the reservoirs are going to be great again for this summer,” Anderson said. “If you are depending in natural stream flow and you don’t have a reservoir to get water from then you are more in a drought situation.” Jeff Anderson of the Natural Resources Conservation Service

This winter the snowpack, on average, was at about 32 percent of normal and jumped to 77 percent. The current water levels could supply Reno with water for the next 3 years.

• Only three times has the Tahoe Basin seen more snow in March, said Jeff Anderson, hydrologist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

• An actual recovery from dismal to decent similar to the most recent month hasn’t happened since the so-called “miracle March” of 1991.

“Well Old Man Winter sure woke up in March this year. Much to the delight of Lake Tahoe Adventures and all our happy guests that were treated to the epic snowmobiling conditions brought on by this March miracle. Better late than never, a great way to finish up the winter.” John Dion
