Maharashtra's water bodies rose to 4.74 lakh, nearly five times the first census total. Uttar Pradesh also recorded an increase, with over 2.86 lakh water bodies noted. In contrast, states like Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh showed significant declines in their water body counts. The second Census of Water Bodies aims to support water management and policy-making efforts.
