Shigella, the gut bacterium behind sexually transmitted diarrhoea, is becoming harder to treat in the US as extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains spread. The infection can cause diarrhoea, stomach cramps, fever and vomiting, while growing antibiotic resistance is limiting treatment options. Canada has also reported XDR Shigella cases, raising concerns about the spread of drug-resistant infections.
