In 1889, archaeologists went looking for a 2,700-year-old tomb. 137 years later, its monumental burial chamber has emerged with gold, weapons and rare treasures

Archaeologists located an ancient Etruscan tomb at the Polledrara necropolis in Vulci, dating back to the seventh century B.C. The tomb, which contains weapons, gold objects, and a nearly complete banquet set, reflects elite burial customs. This significant discovery builds on findings by archaeologist Stéphane Gsell, who mapped the burial mound over a century ago. Evidence suggests extensive looting attempts have occurred over the centuries, yet many artifacts remained intact.
