Matthew Sleman’s innovation journey began when he was just 5 years old and became curious about intellectual property and patents. Looking at his plastic, interlocking building bricks, he began thinking about ways to make them more fun. His brainstorming led to the idea of creating bricks that could change colors. Matthew experimented with different methods of coating the bricks and, with help from his parents, applied for a patent. U.S. Patent Number 11,642,606 for color-changing building bricks was issued in May 2023, making Matthew one of the youngest U.S. patent holders.
