Researchers at the University of Florida found links between glucosamine use and higher dementia progression in individuals with mild cognitive impairment. The study analyzed electronic health records and reported statistical associations but did not prove causation. In experiments with mice, glucosamine increased sugar attachment to proteins, negatively impacting memory performance. Analysis of human brain samples revealed similar protein sugar patterns in Alzheimer's patients.
